I still think that conversations are the future of marketing in higher education. It is no longer about reaching students, it is about reaching everyone. Building a brand is still important, but no college or university can do that alone. The good news is all that training in building relationships will pay off for public relations people. This is where they begin to drive the marketing bus, cut costs and have more success than they could ever imagine by talking through their brand with the authentic voices of their employees, alumni and fans. I had a Florida Gators sweatshirt on the other day at breakfast and a lady I have never met just walked by and said: “Go Gators.” That is amazing to me. A connection without even having any idea of who I was (am). I am sure Walter Lippmann could have written some wonderful work on branding.
